Ex-pats: Spain’s going up in smoke over ban - Ex-pats - Travel & Ex-pats - Huddersfield Examiner: "The UK introduced a smoking ban during 2007. Spain joined the club on January 2 this year, with rules more draconian than the UK dared. The uproar, in a country where smoking has always been popular, was predictable. Former Huddersfield landlord BRIAN HAYHURST, now resident in Fuengirola, Costa del Sol, watches the smoke rise.
THE smoking ban in force here in Spain since January 2 is possibly the toughest in Europe so far.
There has been a mixed reaction from businesses, holidaymakers and residents.
Some bars, cafes and restaurants on the Costa del Sol took an immediate stance and allowed smoking, but many were fined heavily by the newly appointed 900-strong enforcement squad.
This added to their financial misery caused by the recession and general slowdown in trade. Fines range from 30 euros to a whopping 600,000 euros."
